On August 15th, 2015 marks Dr Mikao Usui’s 150th birthday. To honor his life’s legacy and sacred work of Reiki here is a brief history (his-story) of where Reiki came from.
The sacred healing practice of Reiki was discovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan. He was asked the question from a student while teaching at a Christian University in Kyoto Japan, how it was at the time of Jesus many people were healing others with their hands and with all the sick people in the world why we were not still doing this today? Because he had no answer, he retired from teaching and went on a quest to find the answer.
His journey took him to study foreign cultures and many religions around the world. While studying an extensive collection of scriptures at a Chicago University, and yet to find what he was looking for, he remembered that Buddha had healed with his hands. He then returned to Japan to study Buddhism. When he was studying some ancient Sanskrit records at a Buddhist temple, he found what he was looking for and yet did not know how to use this information. He was then guided to meditate on a sacred Mountain for the answer. It was there that he was given the method of how to use the healing energy in a precise way.
When Dr Usui returned from his quest, he established over years of healing and training others in Japan that eventually became recognized at the Usui System of Natural Healing. After his transition in 1926, Reiki was further continued and developed by a recognized spiritual lineage that includes Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furomoto. The oral traditions and sacred initiation rituals of this healing practice as we know it today has been transmitted and held through these four lineage bearers and their time/space in the world as we know it. The practitioners of Reiki hold this lineage with respect.
Today, because of Dr Usui and the work of these spiritual Lineage Bearers, there are initiated Reiki practitioners giving access of healing energy medicine to all the sick people in every country, every culture and religion globally.
